Best known for her Billie Holiday-esque singing style, Katharine Whalen has certainly developed a musical style of her own. It is remarkable that this dame, who is married to James (Jimbo) Mathus, had never been in a band before SNZ, let alone picked up an instrument! Jimbo taught her how to play the banjo, and she taught herself how to sing. Everytime SNZ releases a new album -- and everytime I see them in concert -- Katharine has shown that she possesses a natural tendency in music. She has added her own style (not just what she has learned or heard) that is especially evident in her singing.
